Spring One: Sound
Our Class Novel
The Spiderwick Chronicles by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black
Over this half-term, we will be exploring the book: The Spiderwick Chronicles, looking at the adventures of the Grace siblings after they move into the Spiderwick Estate.
In our English lessons we will be using the fantastics to support us in writing a character description for a Brownie and a Boggart, as well as a letter to support someone in catching a Boggart in their home. We will also use our science knowledge to write a fact file all about sound.
Our Spelling focuses for this half term include;
- recapping Autumn spellings
- the prefix: Super-
- digraphs: ai, aigh, ei, eigh, ey
- the suffix: -ly
- homophones
- Strategies for spelling common 3/4 words
Our focus for Science this half term is 'Sound'. We will be identifying how sounds are made, associating them with something vibrating. We will also be defining parts of the ear and recognising how sound travels in sound waves to the ear.
In Maths, we will carry on looking at multiplication and division. Later in the half term, we will focus on measurement.
Throughout the year, we will have a huge focus on times tables fluency to support children with the multiplication check at the end of year 4. Children can also practice at home by logging into their TTRockstars account.
In Design Technology, we will be making musical instruments. We will develop design criteria to inform the design of innovative, functional and appealing instruments.
Our focus for Geography will be exploring rivers. We will be naming and identifying key rivers, looking at their uses and the impact human activity has. We will also be learning about the cause of floods and how different societies cope.
In Spanish lessons we will be learning simple Spanish greetings and how to ask for names. We will learn simple instructions and be able to follow them.
We will have fortnightly singing assemblies where we will continue to learn songs from last year, as well as adding some more to our repertoire. In Music, we will also be performing rhythmically, improvise repeated patterns and combine layers of sound with awareness of the effect.
In PSHE, we will be focusing on identity, society and equality, looking at our rights as humans. We will also be understanding 'democracy', recognising that we live in a democratic society. We will then explore what it means to be the same and different, valuing our peers.

Autumn Two: Ancient Egyptians
Our Class Novel
The Scarab’s secret by Nick Would
English
In our English lessons we will be reading the Scarabs secret. We will be using the Fantastics to support us in writing a diary entry! We will also be writing a set of instructions on mummification. As our topic is ‘Ancient Egyptians ', we will be using the knowledge we have learnt in history to support the writing of these instructions..
Spellings Focus we are continuing to use Purple mash to deliver spellings.
Our spelling focuses for this half term include;

Science
Our focus for Science this half term is 'States of Matter'. We will be looking at how to define objects as solids, liquids and gases and conducting different experiments to see what makes them change their state.
Maths
In Maths, we will look at multiplication and division. Later in the half term, we will focus on area.

Design technology and Art
In Art, we will be focusing on Egyptian art and be designing and making our own death masks.
History and Geography
Our focus for Geography will be looking at Egypt and the river Nile and how the river was important in the development of Egypt.In History sessions we will be learning about Ancient Egyptians. We will use timelines to identify where the Egyptians sit in time. We will explore their culture and religion, using artefacts to support our learning.
Religious Education
In RE we will be looking at the term 'how important religious events are celebrated’ we will be thinking about the different festivals, making links between them we will also be looking at how these festivals celebrated.
Computing
We be using our research skills to research and then create PowerPoints about Egyptian life.
Spanish
In Spanish lessons we will be learning simple Spanish greetings and how to ask for names. We will learn simple instructions and be able to follow them.
Music
We will have fortnightly singing assemblies where we will continue to learn songs from last year, as well as adding some more to our repertoire. We will also be exploring simple accompaniments and focus on beat and rhythm patterns.
PSHE
In PSHE, we will be focusing on strong emotions, looking at how we can manage them. We will also be looking at our feelings and using a range of different vocabulary to describe them.

Autumn One: What is it like living in the UK?
Our Class Novel
Flat Stanley: On A Mission For Her Majesty
English
In our English lessons we will be focusing on our Flat Stanley text. We will begin by using the fantastics to support us in writing a character description for King Charles! We will also be using our imaginations to write an alternative ending to the story. As our topic is 'Living in the UK', we will be using the knowledge we have learnt in Geography to write an information text about different cities in the UK.

Science
Our focus for Science this half term is 'States of Matter'. We will be looking at how to define objects as solids, liquids and gases and conducting different experiments to see what makes them change their state.
Maths
In Maths, we will begin by recapping our place value skills from Years 2 and 3. We will look at partitioning numbers into thousands, hundreds, tens and ones and explore flexible partitioning. We will be identifying numbers on number lines and look at rounding numbers to the nearest 100 and 1000. Later in the half term, we will focus on new methods to support us with addition and subtraction.

Art
In Art, we will be focusing on the artist Andy Warhol. We will learn about his life as an artist and experiment with creating our own pop art images.
Geography and History
Our focus for Geography will be naming and locating the countries and cities of the United Kingdom. We will identify their human and physical characteristics and understand how some of these have changed over time.
In History sessions we will be learning about Anglo-Saxon Britain. We will use timelines to identify when the Anglo-Saxons came to Britain and why they chose to settle here. We will explore their culture and religion, using artefacts to support our learning.
Computing
In computing we will look at logging into the computer independently. We will also learn about emails and how they are sent using the programme 'Purple Mash'.
Religious Education
In RE we will be looking at the term 'belonging'. We will discuss different communities as well as look at the variety of beliefs in our local area, Yorkshire and the UK. We will look at different places of worship and faith in the community.
